New Opportunities for Students, Employers and Teachers

Iowa Clearinghouse for Work-Based Learning
The Clearinghouse is a virtual space that connects students and schools with employers statewide through shared work-based learning projects.

Work-based learning empowers students to apply what they are learning in the classroom to high-quality, real-world professional experiences. The Iowa Clearinghouse for Work-Based Learning offers new opportunities for K-12 students, employers and teachers. The Clearinghouse is a virtual space that connects students and schools with employers statewide through shared work-based learning projects including virtual projects, internships and apprenticeships.

There are two key features of the Clearinghouse:

  • project board in which Iowa employers post real-world tasks that students complete under the supervision of their teachers.

  • business partner directory for teachers to find other kinds of work-based learning opportunities, such as internships, that employers have expressed interest in.

The Clearinghouse builds on other successful work-based learning options in Iowa, including the STEM Council’s STEM BEST (Businesses Engaging Students and Teachers) Program. The STEM BEST Program supports work-based learning partnerships that take place over the course of an academic year and beyond. Schools and businesses work side-by-side to craft curriculum and prepare students for exciting career pathways.

The Iowa Clearinghouse for Work-Based Learning was established by Gov. Reynolds through an executive order as part of the Future Ready Iowa initiative, which is focused on closing the state’s skilled worker gap by connecting Iowans to the training and education required for rewarding careers. The Clearinghouse is spearheaded by the Iowa Department of Education in partnership with Iowa’s area education agencies, Iowa Workforce Development, the Iowa Economic Development Authority and the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council.
