Code Iowa set to launch during “Hour of Code” on December 8

Student prepares for the "Hour of Code" event
Certified Code Iowa Partners prepare thousands of students for the “Hour of Code.”

In less than two weeks, an estimated 100 million students across the globe will participate in Code.org’s “Hour of Code.” The international event encourages school districts, teachers and parents to guide their students to participate in one hour of computer coding during Computer Science Education Week, beginning December 8.

The STEM Council’s “Code Iowa” helps localize this effort with the goal of engaging Iowa students in coding. Programming is provided free online at www.code.org for K-8 students with information for teachers on how to integrate coding into their classroom. Participating Iowa teachers who registered their entire school for the “Hour of Code” will become Certified Code Iowa Partners, who will be eligible for free K-5 Computer Science workshops in Spring 2015. So far, more than 30 schools have registered with thousands of students across the state expected to participate.

Code.org will award $10,000 to one participating school in Iowa. Then, one school in each of the five STEM regions that did not win the Code.org award will earn $4,000 from the STEM Council, sponsored by Google. The STEM Council will announce the winners of the Google awards during Computer Science Education Week.

Any teacher interested in registering their school to become a Certified Code Iowa Partner and participate in the “Hour of Code” can do so at www.iowastem.gov/codeiowa.
