North Central Iowa STEM Region home to new regional manager

A search team of regional and state STEM Board and Council members successfully nabbed their number one candidate to fill the role as the North Central Iowa STEM Regional Manager. Paul Gibbins will complete the six-person roster of regional managers and start his duties out of Iowa State University on December 1.

As a regional manager, Gibbins will join an all-star team of regional managers across the state that help increase opportunities in STEM education by building relationships between preK-12 schools, community colleges, public and private colleges and universities and STEM-related businesses to establish STEM workforce development needs as part of the STEM Council initiatives. Gibbins will also implement Scale-Up programming in the North Central region, convene regional board meetings, conduct presentations regarding regional, state and national STEM education trends and lead working groups or chair committees that advance the STEM Council’s priorities.

Gibbins’ deep background in mathematics education falls directly in line with the STEM Council’s initiatives. Previous to this new role, he worked as a high school mathematics teacher at Ankeny High School. After graduating from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in Mathematics and from Baker University with a M.L.A. in Education, Gibbins worked for 19 years as a high school mathematics teacher, 12 of which were in Shawnee Mission, Ks. During that time he took on adjunct professor roles for mathematics at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Ks., and then at Central College in Pella where he also served as the college’s Assistant Director of the Upward Bound Math and Science program.

Gibbins experience teaching in STEM education will be vital to the advancement of the STEM Council priorities, especially in mathematics where it hopes to expand opportunities. Please join us in welcoming Paul to Iowa’s STEM team.
