• Thirty-four percent of Iowa eighth-graders scored as proficient in math on the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). (US average = 34%)
   
• Iowa eighth-graders’  average NAEP math score moved just one point – to 285 from 284 – between 1996 and 2011. Massachusetts’ score rose 21 points to 299.
